What To Do If Being Bullied
If you are being bullied it is very important that you take some kind of action. This is the only way to make the bullying stop. If you are being bullied you need to:
  • Choose to ignore them. By ignoring them you reduce the impact they can have on you. There is a distinct difference between choosing to ignore the bully rather than doing nothing about the situation due to fear. Be assertive, project confidence, remain calm and walk away from the bully.
  • Stand up for yourself. Explain to the bully that you don’t care what they think, you are happy the way you are.
  • Tell someone you can trust. It may be your parents, a teacher at school or a kids helps centre. You do not have to deal with bullying on your own. There are plenty of ways to deal with the situation and someone is always on your side and ready to help.
  • Join a group at school. Bullies are less likely to pick on you when you are with friends.
  • Learn to defend yourself. By learning to defend yourself you will naturally have a strong body language, greater self-esteem, good posture and confidence. By knowing how to defend yourself you will significantly reduce the chance of being bullied. Bullies like easy targets who they know will not fight back. If they know you are capable of defending yourself they will most likely leave you alone.
  • If you fear for your safety you must run to a safe area (school administration, the library or a shop or a police station if away from school).
Cyber bullying – an increasing issue
Cyber bullying is the most rapidly expanding kind of abusive behaviour among school children. A great deal of it is conducted outside the school, although it often involves children who attend the same school. There is no doubt that those children repeated targeted with offensive and threatening messages can become very distressed and need help.
