Self Defence Classes Brisbane | Arakan Martial Art

Real World Self Defence for Brisbane and Ipswich

Brisbane is growing fast - more people, more density, more time spent commuting through the CBD, Fortitude Valley and the train network that connects Ipswich, Logan and the southside back into the city. Arakan was built for exactly this kind of environment: real streets, real transit, real crowds, not a padded dojo floor.

Arakan is a complete self-defence system, not a sport. It was developed from Rakhine Thaing, a centuries-old Burmese fighting tradition, and adapted for modern situations by Chief Instructor Robert Kyaw. Where a karate class in Chermside or a boxing gym in the Valley trains you against a trained partner under agreed rules, Arakan trains for an attacker who isn't playing by any rules - because that's the only kind that actually threatens people in real life.

Built for Brisbane's Real Environments

Training scenarios are drawn from the places confrontations actually happen - a train carriage on the Ipswich line, a car park after a late shift in the city, a walk home through West End or Logan at night. Our approach combines striking, grappling and weapon defence with situational awareness and de-escalation, so most of what we teach is about recognising and avoiding danger before it's a fight at all - and finishing it decisively if it can't be avoided.

One-on-One From Day One

Every new student's first lesson is private, one-on-one with an instructor, built around your goals and current ability. There's no group class to slot into and no belt system to keep pace with - beginners with zero prior experience are the norm, not the exception.

Training Across Brisbane and Ipswich

We teach private lessons seven days a week across the City, Northside, Southside, West End, Logan, Ipswich and surrounding areas, with a choice of male or female instructors.

Who Trains With Us

  • Young men drawn to boxing or MMA but looking for something built for real situations, not the ring
  • Women wanting genuinely practical self-defence in a supportive environment
  • Businesses across Brisbane looking for corporate self-defence and team-building sessions with real content behind them

Frequently Asked Questions

I've never trained in anything before - is that a problem?

No. Most of our Brisbane students start with zero background. Your first private lesson is built entirely around where you're starting from.

How is this different to Krav Maga or MMA classes in Brisbane?

Krav Maga and MMA both have valuable elements, but Krav Maga is tactical/military in origin and MMA is fundamentally a ring sport with rules. Arakan combines striking, grappling, weapon awareness and de-escalation into one system built specifically for uncontrolled, real-world confrontations.

Do you teach in Ipswich as well as Brisbane?

Yes - the private lessons and group classes are available across Ipswich and the surrounding suburbs.
