Martial Arts Gold Coast | Arakan - Real World Self Defence

Real World Self Defence, Gold Coast - Arakan's Australian Home Base

Arakan Martial Art isn't taught anywhere else in the world outside this network - and the Gold Coast is where it all started in Australia. When Robert Kyaw brought Rakhine Thaing, the centuries-old fighting system of Myanmar's Arakan region, out of Burma and across the world, the Gold Coast is where he opened the first school. Every Arakan instructor training anywhere in Australia today traces back to this school.

That matters if you're comparing us to a karate dojo in Southport or a boxing gym in Burleigh Heads. Those systems are built around belts, points and competition rules. Arakan was built for one thing: what happens when there are no rules. We train for the situations that actually put Gold Coast locals at risk - a confrontation walking back from the strip on a Saturday night, a carpark at Pacific Fair after dark, a train platform, a break-in. No referee, no weight class, no time-out.

Why Gold Coast Locals Choose Arakan Over Traditional Martial Arts

Most martial arts schools on the Gold Coast teach you to fight another trained person under a fixed set of rules. Arakan teaches you to handle an untrained, unpredictable attacker who isn't playing by any rules at all - because that's the only kind of confrontation that happens outside a gym. Our system blends striking, grappling and weapon awareness into one integrated approach, with a heavy emphasis on situational awareness and de-escalation, so the goal is always avoiding the fight you can avoid and winning decisively the one you can't.

Private Lessons, Not Group Classes

Every new student starts with a private lesson, one-on-one with an instructor, built entirely around your fitness level, your goals and your concerns. There's no group class to keep up with and no belt-grading pressure. Beginners are genuinely welcome - many of our Gold Coast students have never done martial arts before.

Training Across the Gold Coast

We run private lessons seven days a week across Varsity Lakes, Robina, Burleigh Heads, Broadbeach, Southport and the surrounding suburbs, with both male and female instructors available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be fit to start?

No. Your first lesson is built around your current fitness level - we adjust the intensity and technique to you, not the other way around.

Is this a striking art, a grappling art, or both?

Both, plus weapon awareness and techniques. Real confrontations aren't confined to one range, so neither is our training.

Why is the Gold Coast Arakan's home base if it started in Myanmar?

Arakan the art originated in Myanmar's Arakan region. Robert Kyaw brought it to Australia and opened the first Australian school on the Gold Coast - so while the Gold Coast isn't where Arakan began, it is where Arakan began in Australia, and where the tradition is most deeply rooted here.
