Real World Self Defence for Melbourne
Melbourne's laneways, trams and late-night hospitality strips are part of what makes the city great - and part of why real, practical self-defence matters here more than most places. Melbourne also has one of the country's most competitive fitness and martial arts scenes, from boxing gyms to BJJ academies to traditional dojos. Arakan isn't trying to be another option in that list. It's a different category entirely: a complete system built for situations with no rules, not for the ring or the mat.
Arakan comes from Rakhine Thaing, a centuries-old Burmese martial art, brought to Australia and adapted for the modern world by Chief Instructor Robert Kyaw. It combines striking, grappling and weapon awareness with situational awareness and de-escalation - recognising and avoiding danger early is as much a part of training as knowing what to do if you can't.
Built for Melbourne's Real Environments
Training draws on the actual situations that put Melbourne locals at risk - a tram stop late at night, a laneway shortcut, a car park after a shift in the CBD. This is preparation for an untrained, unpredictable attacker acting with no rules, which is the only kind of confrontation that happens outside competition.
One-on-One From Day One
Every new student's first lesson is private, one-on-one with an instructor, built around your own fitness and goals - no group class, no belt-grading treadmill. Most students training with us across Melbourne started with no prior martial arts background at all.
Training Across Melbourne
We run private lessons seven days a week across Melbourne, including the western suburbs around Caroline Springs, inner city suburbs and even as far out as Geelong, with male and female instructors available.
