Real World Self Defence for Sydney
Sydney is one of the densest, busiest cities in the country - packed trains, late finishes in the CBD, long walks home through the Inner West or the Eastern Suburbs after dark. Most self-defence and martial arts options in Sydney are built around a gym floor and a set of competition rules. Arakan was built around what actually happens on a Sydney street, platform or car park when there are no rules at all.
Arakan traces back to Rakhine Thaing, a martial art from Myanmar's Arakan region, adapted for the modern world by Chief Instructor Robert Kyaw. It blends striking, grappling and weapon awareness with situational awareness and de-escalation - the emphasis is on recognising and avoiding danger early, and finishing decisively when there's no way to avoid it.
Trained for Sydney's Real Situations
Training scenarios are drawn directly from environments Sydney locals actually move through - a crowded train carriage, a CBD alley after a late shift, a car park in the Hills District, a walk home through the North Shore. This isn't sparring against a trained partner under rules; it's preparation for an untrained, unpredictable attacker, which is the only kind of confrontation that happens outside a gym.
One-on-One From Day One
New students start with a private lesson, one-on-one, built around your fitness level and goals - not a group class, and not a belt-grading system. Most people who start with us in Sydney have never trained in anything before, and that's exactly who this is designed for.
Training Across Greater Sydney
We run private lessons seven days a week across the CBD, Inner West, North Shore, Eastern Suburbs, Parramatta and beyond, with male and female instructors available.
Who Trains With Us
- Young professionals who want to feel capable navigating the city late at night, not just fit
- Women seeking genuinely practical self-defence in a supportive, non-intimidating setting
- High-pressure professionals (finance, emergency services, front-line roles) looking for stress relief and resilience alongside self-defence
- Businesses across Sydney wanting corporate self-defence and team building sessions with real substance, not a novelty activity
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this suitable if I've never done martial arts?
Yes - it's designed for it. Your first lesson is one-on-one and built entirely around your current ability.
Why not just do boxing or BJJ, which are everywhere in Sydney?
Boxing and BJJ are excellent sports with real skill behind them, but both are built around agreed rules and a single range (striking or grappling). Arakan combines both ranges plus weapon awareness and de-escalation into one system for uncontrolled, real-world confrontations.
Do you train across all of Sydney or just the CBD?
Private lessons are available across the CBD, Inner West, North Shore, Eastern Suburbs, Parramatta and surrounding areas.
