Self Defence Classes Sunshine Coast | Arakan Martial Art

Real World Self Defence for the Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast has a different pace to its southern neighbour on the Gold Coast - quieter beaches, a tighter community, less foot traffic late at night. That doesn't mean personal safety isn't a real concern; it means the risks look a little different, from an isolated beachside carpark to a walk home through a quiet street with no one else around. Arakan is built for exactly those situations - not for a competition mat.

Arakan comes from Rakhine Thaing, a centuries-old Burmese martial art system, brought to Australia and adapted for the modern world by Chief Instructor Robert Kyaw. It blends striking, grappling and weapon awareness with situational awareness and de-escalation, so avoiding a bad situation altogether is treated as seriously as knowing what to do if you can't.

Why Sunshine Coast Locals Choose Arakan Over Traditional Martial Arts

A dojo or boxing gym trains you against another trained partner under agreed rules. Arakan trains you for an untrained, unpredictable attacker who isn't playing by any rules - because that's the only kind of confrontation that happens outside a gym. The system is built to work even without size, strength or prior experience.

One-on-One From Day One

Every new student's first lesson is private, one-on-one with an instructor, built around your fitness level and goals. There's no group class to slot into and no belt-grading system - beginners with zero background are exactly who this is designed for.

Training Across the Sunshine Coast

We run private lessons seven days a week across the Sunshine Coast, with both male and female instructors available.

Who Trains With Us

  • Young men who've thought about boxing or MMA but want something that actually works outside the gym
  • Women wanting real, practical self-defence in a supportive, non-intimidating environment
  • Professionals and shift workers wanting genuine confidence, not just fitness
  • Businesses across the Sunshine Coast looking for corporate self-defence or team building with real substance behind it

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be fit to start?

No - your first lesson is built around your current fitness level, whatever that is.

Is this suitable for someone who has never done martial arts?

Yes - that's who it's designed for. Most of our Sunshine Coast students start with no prior background at all.

What makes Arakan different from a typical self-defence course?

Most short self-defence courses teach a handful of moves in isolation. Arakan is a complete system - striking, grappling, weapon awareness and de-escalation - built specifically for real, uncontrolled confrontations, not a single scenario.
